This
is a screenplay with no hard and fast rules, the only regulation
here is action - as you like it, smooth.
Danny Ocean (George Clooney) is a man of action. Less than
24 hours into his parole from a New Jersey penitentiary, the
wry, charismatic thief is already rolling out his next plan.
Following three rules - don't hurt anybody, don't steal from
anyone who doesn't deserve it, and play the game like you've
got nothing to lose - Danny orchestrates the most sophisticated,
elaborate casino heist in history.
In one night, Danny's handpicked 11-man crew of specialists,
most of them of whom have been charged under felony or some
or the other crime - including an ace card sharp (Brad Pitt),
a master pickpocket (Matt Damon) and a demolition genius (Don
Cheadle) - will attempt to steal over $150 million from three
Las Vegas casinos owned by Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), the
elegant, ruthless entrepreneur who just happens to be dating
Danny's ex-wife Tess (Julia Roberts).
The entire film rolls with this as a baseline - money enough
to vacation for a lifetime and for Danny get his woman back
too. Of course this endangers the entire operation, the embroilment
of Danny with ex-wife and so he is thrown off the assignment
at the last minute. Thoroughly professional, the group goes
ahead with the mastermind plan without Danny. Yet, one wonders
whether this move is part of the plan, a deflection, a red
herring for Terry.
The story flow holds attention, there is not a moment of boredom,
not a moment to lose, the script is crisp with a lot of humor
and there is nothing dark about conmen gathered to loot another
man - the ruthless Terry who is more into looting everybody
on a daily basis. Owner of three of the largest Casinos in
the city of Las Vegas, he is the only dark character who supposedly
razes competitors to a rubble. And so, Ocean's gang finds
a forced to retire casino owner Elliot Gould as solvent to
their plan.
Suffice to say, the interest generated by this film was not
just due to the devastating duo -Clooney and Pitt. Oops, nearly
forgot to mention Julia Roberts, she flits in and out, surprising
that Julia had such a small role, considering that she always
has the lioness' share in most of the films. However, she
lends grace and romance to the film and a little laugh as
to how women can be wooed back when the man is as handsome
and clever as Danny.
Must watch movie!!! Frank Sinatra would be pleased that the
retelling of the Ocean's 11 is as debonair as the original
one.
