MOVIE REVIEW
Mirch

A small budget but significant cinema from the hands of Vinay Shukla, Mirch is clearly a thought provoking movie which deals with modern issues such as a woman's sexuality and gender equality in our country. Bollywood is no longer under pressure to play coy and that is clearly highlighted in the characters of Mirch, the girls shedding all inhibitions when it comes to baring all for the film camera.

The tale of Mirch introduces us to a gentleman named Manav who is prepared to do anything to secure a place in the film world as a successful filmmaker. However, when his initial scripts get rejected by a producer, he takes the help from the Panchatantra series to write down his own adaptation of the story of a girl who comes out unscathed even after her husband catches her red handed in bed with another man. While there are complains about the length of his film being short, Manav makes four modern stories inspired from the Panchatantra, all based on the subject of adultery and highly erotic in content.

As Manav's plot suggests, his actors will now have to shed all to enact their part in the movie within a movie. Mirch is thus a combination of four stories. The stories are thematically linked to one another but speak about four different sets of lives.

National Award winning movie 'Godmother' director Vinay Shukla tries his hand at original, adulterous short stories weaved together with a plot of a struggling filmmaker.

The strength of the movie lies in brilliant story telling coupled with superlative performances by the ensemble cast, our pick - Raima and Konkana. The format of the movie takes its time to grow on the audience but once you are at it, you are glued to your seat to see how the director will cleverly conclude the four stories where the woman is cheating on her man.

Out of the four stories in 'Mirch', Raima is the 'hero' in two, while Konkana takes centre stage in the other two. Raima is brilliant as a beautiful wife of Panchtantra days in floral jewellery, while Konkana strikes a chord with the audience both as a Rajasthani princess and a unfaithful wife of modern day times. Rajpal Yadav is likable. Shreyas does a good job portraying different characters on screen. Boman Irani proves again that he is a natural in front of the camera. Prem Chopra is humorous and convincing. Ila Arun is spunky. Arunoday does a decent job but becomes unbearable with too much screen time, especially when he plays a painter.

‘Mirch' absolutely is different cinema (for adults only). The titillating plot of the movie, smart writing and the stunning cast make it a must watch.
