Having a famous father isn’t always a boon. Sometimes it becomes
too difficult to get out of that shadow, find oneself or match
up to the famous parent’s enigma. We have seen it happen to
Abhishek Bachchan in the early years of his career, to Rahul
Gandhi and many others… but what one sees in Gandhi- My Father
is a shocking revelation.
The film is Gandhi and his son Harilal’s story. Though it’s
also about India’s tryst to gain independence, the focus is
on how a young life goes astray due to lack of attention,
ego hassles, low conviction or perhaps low self esteem and
absolutely no direction to lead a life. While the Mahatma
played by Darshan Zariwala shows the path to freedom that
the whole country follows, he cannot convince his son Harilal,
played by Akshay Khanna the same.
While throughout the film one feels sad when Harilal weeps
silently not for a moment can you blame Gandhi for it… the
beauty of the film is that you can’t take sides… exactly how
Kasturba enacted by Shefali Shah feels. She is caught between
the love and dedication for her husband but at the same time
her heart goes out to Harilal.
Performances by Darshan Zariwala, Akshay Khanna, Shefali Shah
take you into a roller coaster ride. If into the film you
experience the highs and lows they experience as the film
progresses.
It’s a must watch and one must congratulate Anil Kapoor for
being brave with his first productional debut.
