With animation movies made on Hanuman, Lord Krishna, et al,
it is quite a delight to see a movie made in the honor of
Ghatothkach, a forgotten hero. Here is a movie that brings
him out straight from the books of mythology, into an amicable
presentation. Ghatothkach, the son Hidimba and Bhima has magical
powers which he utilizes for helping others. As a kid he spends
his time in a forest with great adventures, among which is
included the saving of a baby elephant, who becomes his partner
forever. The second half is the demonstration of his adulthood,
as he tries to unite a couple, i.e. son of Arjun, Abhimanyu
and daughter of Balram, Surekha. Hile thecouple gets married
secretly, the parents go against their relationship. Surekha’s
father Balram decides to get her married to Duryodhana’s son,
Lakshmana. Ghatothkach with the help of lord Krishna unites
the two. With his magical powers, he turns into Surekha and
replaces her in the marriage.
Although the director takes the liberty
to bring changes in the factual incidences, the audience receives
it very well, as it works in favor of holding the attention
throughout. The scenes in the first half are hilarious as
Ghattu goes through the adventures in the jungle, and tries
to teach the elephant mantras to perform magic. The second
half differentiates the movie from other animated movies made
earlier on mythological characters, as it shows the romance
of a couple. Thus the movie is not sculpted only for kids.
The scene of Surekha and Lakshamana’s wedding
are rib tickling as we see Ghattu (in the body of Surekha)
flirting with Lakshmana.
