Now this multi-talented artist is all set to make an impression on music fans worldwide, from his fusion beats to his strong vocals, Chan Has is bringing us a mix-up of flavours. His latest track ‘Galeh Lagja’ is just a taste of what is to come, so as he leaves us curious to know what else is in store, I have a chat with him to find out more!
How did you get started in music?
Well coming from a musical family at the age of 8 I was playing various instruments naturaly which then lead to learning these instruments professionaly. Growing up I spent a lot of my time with my brother (5RB) in his studio picking up his skills while he wrote, produced & sung his own songs. Not long after my brother (5RB) launched his track titled 'Akhiyan' which was a huge, massive smash hit track which then pushed me to go learn more about music production & the aim was at that point to follow in his footsteps.
Coming from a musical family, what music were you exposed to when growing up and how did this help you form your own style?
From a young age I always listened to folk Punjabi music such as Chamkila, Yamla Jatt etc.. Then later my brother (5RB) introduced me to a much updated sound like DCS, Sahotas, Apna Sangeet, Mangal Singh. My sisters got my into my Bollywood, then my school days things changed more, bhangra branched out & became very modernised, so modernised it wasn't even bhangra.
At that point I felt I had to present music for youngsters without us loosing that desi flavour.
I then attended college were I actualy became a raw Hip Hop & RnB lover, bhangra was on my I-pod & at that point I was starting to experiment with Desi music & Hip Hop so that Bhangra could be just as cool as Maintream music.
They were the days International Urban music producer Rishi Rich launched The Project.
The style of production then was something I had imagined to do myself & I was highly motivated by looking at what they had created as that mashup & fusion was then my aim.
So Folk, Bhangra, Bollywood, Mainstream & a Fusion of them all = Chan Has.
You are also a producer, how did you develop your production techniques, do you have a signature style?
My style is to give Bhangra that cutting edge electric sound. To be weird, have abnormal beats & use alternatives to the normal instruments you hear banging in your cars.
My signature is you'll hear 'Haanji' (lol) in atleast 1 part of the track. Haha
No seriously in my tracks, towards the end I always like to give them a crazy outro & sometimes if it sounds right to I love to add some English Alaap or something to show my Urban side.
When did you realise you had vocal talent?
Well I've always been singing along to songs quietly making sure no one could h ear me as it wasn't something I had intensionaly wanted to showcase but over the years I had been recording numerous amounts of artists & I was directing them vocaly which made me confident in me knowing how to deliver vocals.
How has being signed to i-Rok records opened up more doors and opportunities?
I-Rok unlike other Independant labels offered me the coaching, artist developement, the experience & facilities to help myself grow & get stronger as a producer, singer & performer.
They have done more than what any other Bhangra labels have done for other ar tists from what I've seen, working alongside them has been more like a degree than a Record Label & they have showcased me better than any other label could have.
Also my PR/Marketing agency (FNIK PR) have a hand in my exposure so loads of love to my team at I-ROK & Pedro at FNIK PR.
They have had me performing worldwide which has deffinatley opened many doors to many bigger deals & collaborations.
If you could change one thing about the music scene what would it be?
1 thing is not enough. LOL
I would love to see every record label supporting they're artists in terms of giving them what they deserve & I'd love to see more music channels that are official & VPL registered so that artists can claim a wage & continue to make music. Also I'd love to see 1 official UK chart show which Is actuali made up of record sales from digital downloads & hard copy sales instores.
I could go on forever but yeh, I'd love to see these changes.
Who would you love to collaborate with?
I'd have loved to work with the late R D Burman as his creativeness has always been inspiring & his attitude towards his success was just so humble.
Tell us about your latest track Galeh Lagja?
What has the response been like so far?
My latest track 'GL' (Galeh Lagja) was the 1st track I ever produced for myself & is the 1st ever track I written for myself. This track was complete in 2008 & I'd been performing it up & down the country for the last 2 years.
Within that space I had changed massively in terms of production & vocaly & thought before I launch 'GL' I'd throw a bait in to the industry 1st (My 1st single 'CHORI CHORI') to see the reaction & test how things worked as it was the 1st piece of work that was going to be an official launch.
Then learning from many mistakes as you do, I felt it was safe to drop 'GL' & make a mark in the industry.
It’s been just over a week & the Radio plays worldwide are building up more & more. Youtube hits have grown rapidly & now they are bookings coming in from as far as South Africa.
So deffinatley 'GL' is going as expected & I can only wait & enjoy the view from were I'm sitting.
What was it like filming the music video, and how did you come up with the concept?
The music video for GL was tiring, funny & most of all fun as it was quite a grungy location, loads of space to mess about in, many models ;) & dancers to be working with. Its 1 of 2 video's I've performed in as a solo artist & it was an unforgettable experience.
The concept was raised by 1 of my managers which actuali sounded quite funky & not too fake.
Not wasting any time Feature film director Phill Hawkins was put to work & an amazing script was produced & later was put into effect.
What are you currently working on?
I'm currently touring the UK with my new single 'GL' (Galeh Lagja), there's not one night when I'm not doing a radio or magazine interview. So I'm pretty booked up & as of music I'm just waiting to get back into the studio to make a start on my solo album that I'm still writing at this moment.
Many other projects have popped up which I will also be getting my hands into so do watch out for some crazy business to hit your screnes.
