It’s time to kick some serious girl power into the UK Asian music scene, as we introduce a young talented lady who goes by the name KEE. Hailing from the midlands, singer and songwriter KEE is blessing us with her mind-blowing hindi vocals and beautiful lyrics. A contemporary take on Hindi music, her music style proves that she is not afraid to experiment to create her own unique sound.
With the release of her latest track ‘Jaaneman Part 2’ and her debut album ‘Zindagi’ in the pipeline, I catch up with KEE to find out more!
For those who haven’t heard your music, tell us abit about yourself?
I am a Singer/Songwriter from the midlands. I have a huge passion for Bollywood, therefore I sing mostly in Hindi. I am not afraid to experiment and I would like to think that my music is original.
How did your musical journey begin?
My journey began 5 years ago when I wrote my first song and discovered my passion. I was quickly encouraged by my friends and family to give it a go. I was blessed to have people like Hunterz & Vee around me who gave me the professional training and guidance I needed. I continued to develop and work on my sound behind the scenes and now I feel like I know who Kee is.
Your style is very Hindi-Rock, what artists did you grow up listening to and how did this influence your style?
My taste in music varies as I am influenced by so many different artists. I love anything from Beyonce to Lata and Michael Jackson to Atif Aslam. I guess that’s why my music will always contain some kind of fusion.
You have shared the stage with some big names, who have you enjoyed working with most?
It would have to be with Arjun which was my first ever performance, supporting him in 2008. I was so nervous yet excited, but more importantly it was where it all started.
Who would you love to collaborate with?
AR Rahman for one, he is a musical genius. Singers I would like to work with are Jay Sean, Sonu Nigam, Atif Aslam for obvious reasons and there are many more!
What was the response like to your debut single ‘Crazy’?
The response was great especially being a new artist. My debut single made the remix album ‘Let’s get crazy on the dance floor’ (named after my single) and was released globally by Universal Music, a fantastic achievement!
Tell us about your latest track Jaaneman Part 2?
I featured on the original Raxstar’s single. I sang the hindi chorus which fans went crazy about. They then requested I sang my own version in Hindi. There was a lot of pressure as the original was such a great success. But it all came together; especially when Raxstar then featured in my version, the story became complete. Both versions have completely different vibes and the response has been huge!
What was it like filming the music video, and how did you come up with the concept?
As with any video it can become stressful, but we still managed to have jokes on set. Luckily for me, as I am no actress, we used actor Asad Shan who really helped bring my character to life. The concept was very much put together by Sahdev Media who represent me. They have been working very closely on my image and they needed to make sure my new look complimented my soft vocals. The song is about reminiscing, missing a loved one. A very mellow, romantic song and I am really pleased with the outcome.
What have been the most difficult obstacles you have faced whilst in the music industry?
Being a newcomer is a challenge in itself. The industry is very bhangra orientated in the UK; therefore it is twice as hard to be different aswell. But determination is the key, you just need the right track and then let the music speak.
What are you currently working on?
Mela season is here and I have been working really hard in the studio to bring you some brand new tracks. We have some performances in India soon and I’ll be going to USA in a few months to work with more producers. I want to show you a different side of me so I am really looking forward to the next releases. I am also working on my debut album ‘Zindagi’ looking to release in September 2011.
