B4U THE VIBE catches up with the latest artist to hit us with some British Bollywood! 23 year old Mithun, has been singing and performing from a young age, having been classically trained to sing in Hindi and play the harmonium, he has certainly got the credentials to compliment his talent. His current track Meri Jaan has already hit the airwaves. so I catch up with Mithun to find out more!
For those who haven't heard of you, tell us a bit about yourself...
I'm a British born Hindi singer/songwriter. I got introduced to music when I was seven years old by my grandfather. He inspired me to practice music and started coaching me in the Indian classical discipline. Since then I have been taking lessons from my mother who is vocally trained. I have been writing and composing songs for nearly five years now.
How would you define your musical style?
My music has an Asian/RnB vibe and most of my songs have an element of romance in them!
What training did you have to undergo for classical Hindi singing?
As mentioned previously my grandfather and mother have coached me vocally. I practice my Raags on a regular basis as part of my vocal training alongside my Harmonium.
Although your music is primarily Hindi, you have fused this with elements from the RnB genre; do you feel this helps make it more appealable to a wider audience?
Yeah, I think it definitely does. Crossing over two different genres brings both audiences together.
Who has been the most influential musician for you?
I have been inspired musically by many artists in the industry such as Abrar Ul Haq and Enrique Iglesias. They are both from totally different music genres, and there you can see why I crossover both genres in my music.
What is your all time favourite Bollywood song?
'Zara Sa' from the film 'Jannat' is a beautiful track, I'm a big fan of Pritam's work (Bollywood music producer). There are so many great songs. I have to say I really like the new song by Sajid-Wajid "Kehdo Zara" from the film 'Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai.'
Tell us a bit about your first two hot singles Aaja Tu Mere Naal and 'Meri Jaan'? What has the response been like?
The response to both singles has been really positive; it's such amazing feeling to know people love my music.
My debut single 'Aaja Tu Mere Naal' was produced by Jinx and my second single 'Meri Jaan' was written by myself and produced by Knightstar (Producer B). It's a slow jam; total opposite of the first single. In terms of inspirations for these two songs, my friends' and their situations inspired me.
'Meri Jaan' is a romantic love song. It's simply about a guy telling a girl how he feels. I want everyone to be able to relate to my music. My songs are written based on experiences, either personal or from someone's close to me.
Is there anyone in the music scene you would love to collaborate with?
Abrar Ul Haq has been a big inspiration to me so it would be a dream come true to collaborate with him. He's such a talented guy, but doesn't always get the praise and credit his amazing work deserves.
When can we get a copy of the debut album and what surprises can we expect from it?
As I'm more of a Hindi/Urdu artist, y ou can expect a new mix of Hindi and Punjabi genre, with a twist of Arabic. The main producer of the album is Knightstar who's been amazing and great to work with. The album is a story of experiences. I think and hope a lot of people will be able to relate to their personal experiences from it. It will be released this summer, with a few surprise collaborations, so watch this space!
What is in the pipeline for Mithun for the rest of the year apart from the album release this summer?
Well before the album comes out I'm releasing my third single. Without giving too much away, I worked alongside a brilliant well established producer/director on this catchy summer tune so keep a look out for it!
Is there anywhere the B4U fans can catch you perform?
I'll be performing at various Mela's up and down the country this summer so make sure you come along!
