Young Archie Assignment consists of 4 talented individuals representing different genres and styles; together they form a strong versatile group with a distinctive, unique sound. Their latest track 'Nachna' has had instantaneous appeal and their debut album is set for release later this year. So I catch up with the Young Archie Assignment members, the gifted rapper Nock, Vocalists Maya and Nia and the talented producer Young Archie to find out how it all began, group dynamics, and future plans!
How did the Young Archie Assignment form?
Young Archie was working alongside Nia when he was introduced to Maya through a mutual friend. Archie thought it would be cool to fuse the two vocals together. This team worked well. Nock and Archie met on MySpace. Nock's determination and enthusiasm impressed Archie that's when he introduced Nock to YAA!
If you could use three words to describe Y.A.A what would they be?
Young Ambitious Asians!
Nia your vocal style really fits the RnB genre whereas Maya you tend to sing in Punjabi and hindi, so your vocals are more influenced by the Asian culture. Does the fusion of both vocals work well to make the group more versatile?
Having this fusion really helps diversify our sound. We have the ability to create an all out r'n'b sound, bollywood sound or a mix of both. So in that respect it does make the group more versatile.
Young Archie, when it comes to producing how has the music you grew up listening to influence the music you make now?
It has been a major influence. I grew up listening to R'n'B, soul... Just old school.
I try to create beats that are innovative but with elements of old school in it, so be it the synth or even a melody!
So Nock.tell us about your rapping. Are there any artists that you feel your style is similar to?
I like to listen to a variety of artists and pick up on what they do well and try and encoporate those aspects into my rhyming. Hopefully it then means because of the mix, I create my own style... But i guess that's for people listening to decide!!!
You also write your own lyrics, when it comes to lyrical content where do you get your inspiration?
Yes, we write our own lyrics for our songs and as for inspiration, although it sounds a bit cliche, but it really is all around us! One minute we might be shopping in a supermarket, some little thing happens and a whole story can be written to put into a song. Everyday life is such a fascinating place with so many creative moments!
What are your thoughts on the diversity of UK Asian music scene? Are there any artists from the scene you plan on working with in the near future?
The diversity is good. It broadens our reach and gets us hitting other niches. It means that there is a wider market and audience through diversity. As for working with artists, right now we are so busy making tracks that the opportunity to work with others hasn't arisen. But who knows what the future has in store!
Your tracks make anyone want to dance no matter where they are! Do you enjoy performing them live? Where was your favourite performance?
We love performing our songs live, it is such a great buzz. The best place has got to be in Manchester! We were all very nervous and felt that the crowd was hostile. However when we started, we had people dancing about, blowing horns and whistles!! The best thing was, the people started singing Nachna! Crazy! It's amazing to see your fans singing along to your songs!
Any future performances we should watch out for?
We are going to be at a few Mela's up and down the country and also some gigs. So please do check out our website and Facebook for details.Youngarchieassignment.com
So when can we expect the debut album from Y.A.A?
As soon as it's ready! We are looking close the freshers time...so watch out for it!
Who would you like to collaborate with?
We would be honoured and blessed to work with anyone. But Jay Sean would be wicked because of his song writing skills and it would also be great to do a mad MashUp with Rishi rich and YAA!
Tell us a bit about your latest track Nachna?
Nachna is a feel good track. It's an electro vibe with synths and a fast beat. It has a great, catchy chorus and we hope everyone enjoys it!
It's got the odd Indian instrumentation with an old school electro feel. You can download it FREE from our website you know??
I hear the video has a few famous faces? Was it fun to make?
Well, we were blessed to have Mr Ameet 'bend it like beckham' Chana (ameet chana). He was wicked to work with. It was an honour to have him there and we had a laugh with him.
So what's in store for Y.A.A in the near future?
Our album and more videos! We want to do another video before the album drops, however we are concentrating on finishing the album. But whatever is in store, we want to appreciate each day of this journey. We are going to remain thankful and grounded!!
