The
struggle and injustice Indians faced during the pre-independence
days has been time and again explored by our filmmakers. Even
in the silent film era, 1913-34 several films like My Country
(1927), Our Hindustan (1928) and Pride of Hindustan (1931)
were made. With the advent of technology, films with sound
began to be made and perhaps the first film to bring to light
the scheming ways of the British was Sohrab Modi's Pukar (1939).
Sohrab Modi was the Manoj Kumar of those days and made several
films that concentrated on the injustice faced by the Indians
under the Brititsh rule. His films also made some of our Kings
who then ruled certain territories seem like fools as they
got carried away with what the 'goras' had to say. Shorab
Modi later also made Jhansi Ki Rani (1953) depicting the life
of the queen of Jhansi who valiantly fought the British even
though India by then had become a free country.
Several films have been made between 1955-2000, especially
by Manoj Bharat Kumar. Some have gone to become great hits,
while some met with dismissal fate at the box-office. Presenting
some select movies that kindled the flame of patriotism for
more than half a century of independence!
