Bahu
begum [1967]
Nawab Sikandar Mirza (Ashok Kumar) falls for Zeenat Jahan Begum
(Meena Kumari) who in turn loves Nawab Yusuf (Pradeep Kumar). Sikandar
puts forward proposal. Zeenat agrees thinking that it is Yusuf who
has proposed her. It is only on the day of the marriage that she
learns that the man who send the proposal is Sikandar and not Yusuf.
She runs away from home. When she returns to her father’s house,
she thrown out of the house. She seeks refuge in kotha. Meanwhile
an empty doli reaches Sikandar’s house. Sikandar’s sister however
saves the situation saying that the new bride was not well and was
resting in the room. Desperate to worm out of the situation, Sikandar
calls the kotha asking them to send a tawaif who could masquerade
as a bahu of the family. And the one woman that the kothawali happens
to send across is none other then Zeenat Jahan Begum.
Garam
hawa [1973]
Garam Hawa dealt with the touchy issue of the India-Pakistan partition
that had brought about not only emotional trauma but also social
economic disorder. Because of its touchy theme the film was stuck
with the censors for eight months. And contrary to expectations
it became a critical and commercial success and won accolades for
the sensitive portrayal of the greatest tragedy the struck the nation.
Balraj Sahni won his first National Award for the role but died
a few days before the official announcement.
Nikaah [1982]
The film tackled the touchy subject the Muslim divorce law. Niloufer
(Salma Agha) marries Deepak Parashar. Since he gets busy with his
business, he is unable to devote time at home. And the day of their
anniversary comes home drunk that worsens the situation. He screams
Talaq and she later marries Raj Babbar. The conflict begins when
he wants her back. 'Dil ke armaa aanson mein bah gaye' gave Salma
Agha more popularity for her voice than her acting.
Bombay
[1995]
The film put forward a pertinent question whether love and humanity
transcend the bounds of religion? Two lovers Arvind Swamy, a Hindu
and Manisha Koirala, a musilim elope, get married and move to Mumbai.
They have two children. Terror strikes when the Babri Masjid is
demolished and the fast paced city is hit by the riots. When released
fear gripped the city. What if the film sparked off riots again?
Police forces were made to keep strict vigil outside the theatres!
The film marked the beginning of Sonali bendre’s career and blossoming
of Manisha Koirala into a wonderful actress.
Fiza
[2000]
Amman is a doted son and a loved brother who is victimized by circumstances
during a Hindu Muslim riot following the Bombay blasts. He gets
lost and then is found by his sister Fiza played by Karisma Kapoor.
The film is basically about the quest of finding Amman who had disappeared
one night followed by the riots. When Amman meets Fiza he is a through-bred
terrorist and refuses to give up his ways. Fiza coaxes him to come
back and she wins too. Only to lose him in a suicide mission.
Mission Kashmir [2000]
To prove his loyalty to India, Inayat Khan a staunch Muslim takes
up the mission of getting the dreaded terrorist Altaaf behind bars.
On the other hand Altaaf knows Khan as the killer of his parents
even though it was a misjudgment and khan had brought the orphan
home and taken care of him till one day Altaaf learnt the truth
and ran away. He returns swearing revenge and is used by his mentor
Jackie Shroff. In the end he realises his folly and amends his ways.
Zubeida [2001]
Zubeidaa showed how people hailing from the royal families were
tainted with emotions of lust greed anger and jealousy. It took
you back in time and gave you a glimpse into a heart of a passionate
troubled woman who lost everything that she loved.
