Murder
Made on shoe string budget of 5 crores Murder turned out to be the biggest hit of the year garnering profit over 20 crores. What’s more Murder had a combo of actors who were not familiar names with the masses—Emraan Hashmi, Ashmit Patel and Mallika Sherawat. According to trade pundits Murder had the right doses of emotions, songs, sex and suspense and that is what made it a hit. Followed a spate of films that had heavy doses of sex scenes included but sorry they failed to compete with the success of Murder.
Mujhse Shaadi Karogi
It was after a long time that a common man got to see a David Dhawan film. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi was a hit from the word go. It had two actors coming together for the first time—Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan. And it also had a fairly successful actress—Priyanka Chopra. This typical David Dhawan fair found favourable response at the boxoffice.
Veer Zaara
It was nearly after a decade that one got to witness a film directed by veteran director like Yash Chopra. What worked for the film was the clever strategy used by the Chopras to release the film. The Chopras bound the multiplex owners under a contract stipulating that Veer Zaara would be released only those multiplexes that agreed to reserve more than two screens for the film. The strategy worked and how. Veer Zaara collected over Rs 2 crores in the first week itself. However the collections in the subsequent weeks slumped.
Main Hoon Na
Main Hoon Na was declared a hit and Farha Khan proudly said, “The days of choreography are over.” Farha’s typical masala film that had Matrix kind of technology used in the action and stunt sequences proved to be a top favourite not only with the adults but also children. Shahrukh Khan reigned to be a favourite yet again with the masses. Main Hoon Na also gave Zayad Khan his much needed hit.
Hum Tum
The promos had two cute cartoon characters—a boy and a girl—up in arms against each other. Here was a film that promised something different. And Kunal Kohli’s second venture stood out to be different. The film had Saif, an uppity youth who could not stand the opposite sex and there was Rani Mukherjee, a bubbly girl who did not know the meaning of word man. Thus began the war of the sexes. Then of course what followed was the inevitable—a romance between them. And then a rift! And a kiss and a makeup. Hum Tum was a surprise hit of the year.
Dhoom
Yet another surprise hit of the year of Dhoom. The Chopras could not have asked for anything better what with three hits under their belt—Hum Tum, Dhoom and Veer Zaara.
Dhoom also put Abhishek Bachchan’s career on an upswing even though Dhoom was Abhsihek’s only hit of the year.
